A few skin symptoms have been reported which can be observed. A doctor should be consulted immediately.
Dry, cracked skin or lips:
According to Dr. Roshini Raj, an assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine, dry or cracked lips or skin is a warning sign of dehydration. It can also indicate a more serious problem that affects the work of the sweat glands, such as hypothyroidism (insufficient levels of thyroid hormone) or diabetes.
“The yellowness of the skin is a sign of anemia,” said Dr. Malika Marshall of Massachusetts General Hospital. Yellow indicates liver disease while blue color of lips and nails may indicate heart or lung disease.
Itching and spots:
Dr. Roshni Raj says that some digestive problems also appear on the skin. Combinations of red spots may indicate coeliac disease. On the other hand, ‘butterfly’ shaped rashes on the cheekbones and on the nose can be a sign of lupus (autoimmune disease). Allergies, eczema and some infections also cause itching on the face.
Swelling of the eyes:
Clogged and tired eyes can indicate a chronic allergic condition, which dilates the blood vessels and causes them to leak. This condition causes swelling and dark purple color in the sensitive skin under the eyes.
