Create a task force to prevent misinformation at the international

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called on the United Nations to set up a task force to prevent “misinformation” at the international level, which could engage regularly with member states and other stakeholders.

Addressing a virtual meeting of the Group of Friends, a group fighting for “disinformation” for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized the need for the world to be online and private. There should be an international strategy to prevent offline misinformation.

Suggesting ways to deal with such elements as misinformation, the Foreign Minister emphasized the need to increase public awareness and create social resistance and resilience against misinformation through information campaigns promoted by member states and the United Nations.

He also stressed the need to increase the capacity of governments and their agencies to detect, analyze and expose misinformation and their networks.

He said the United Nations and its agencies should develop the capacity to analyze and verify information in member countries, especially in developing countries, and especially online information.

He said financial and technical assistance should be provided to national and international researchers as well as organizations fighting against misinformation.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the UN Department of Information could play a key role in this regard.

He said the world should focus on cooperation to reduce the negative impact of misinformation on human rights, communities and states by building a firewall against misinformation.

He said the United Nations should formulate guidelines for initiatives, including the use of advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, to act as a dynamic force for national and international activities.

In his address, the Foreign Minister also suggested that the United Nations should formulate rules and regulations to regulate the private sector, social media campaigns and other non-governmental organizations.
