How to Add Links to Instagram Stories – For All Users

How to Add Links to Instagram Stories For All

Previously, Instagram allowed proficient users to add links to their Stories with the swipe up feature. Account followers can view the link by swiping up from the bottom while viewing Stories. This feature has been discontinued since then. Now Instagram has a new way to add links to Stories which we will discuss in a minute. But before we discuss how to add links to Instagram Stories with Link Stickers, we want to clear up some misconceptions or atmosphere.

  • You don’t need a verified account.
  • You don’t need 10k followers.
  • You don’t need a business account.

When Instagram first announced the feature, it was limited to only a handful of users who met the above criteria, but that’s no longer the case. Now anyone and everyone can add a link. It’s just that the option isn’t immediately visible or easy to find. Instagram could have done better with UI placement.

How to add a link to an Instagram story

For example, I will use Android to add the Link Sticker, however, the steps for iOS are more or less the same. There might be some minor UI changes but easy enough if you’re a longtime iPhone user.

first. Copy the link of the website you want to add to your Instagram Story. Now, open Instagram and tap Your Story in the top left corner of the screen. Preferences are indicated by your profile picture.

2. Knock on Camera which should be left blank.

3. The camera module will open inside Instagram. Option Story from the bottom by scrolling. Tap the shutter icon once to take a photo, or press and hold to record a video.

4. Once you’ve recorded a video or taken a photo, tap Stickers.

5. Now choose Link from the list.

6. Paste the link you copied in step 1 above. You can customize the text here using Customize stickers Option. Light weight Done when you are satisfied with the result.

7. You should now see a preview of the Story with the link at the top. Post a Story as you normally would. Customize it to your liking. When satisfied with the results, tap the Your Story option at the bottom to post.

Why Swipe Up Link has been removed for Link Stickers

The Swipe Up feature allows users to tap an arrow or swipe up from the bottom of the screen to view and tap a shared link in an Instagram Story.

Instagram removed the Swipe Up to Link feature back in August. Instagram cited two reasons for doing so. One is to ‘streamline the story creation experience’ and the other is to provide more ‘creative control’. It could also be that Instagram is trying to imitate TikTok. Currently, TikTok has a vertical movement while Stories in Instagram move horizontally. Given the growing popularity of the former and the way social media giants copy each other’s features all the time, this wouldn’t surprise me.

As discussed earlier, the Swipe Up feature is limited to verified accounts or accounts with a certain number of followers. Other users have felt left out and have been complaining for a while. Instagram finally listened and decided to not only remove the restrictions, but also change the user interface a bit.

How Link Stickers are better in Instagram

Why go through all the trouble? First, users get used to the Sitckers option and use it all the time while sharing stories. Instagram thinks this way, they will discover the link feature more naturally.

Stickers are also better at controlling the position of the link and where the link will appear when the Story goes live.

While the swipe up feature only allows IG users to see the link, Stickers also allow them to participate in the story through comments and reactions.

You can consider Link Stickers as the next evolution of Swipe Up.
