Lahore High Court has given a big decision regarding polling agents in Punjab by-election

The Lahore High Court suspended the Election Commission’s notification to appoint polling agents from the respective constituencies.

The High Court heard a petition against the Election Commission’s decision to appoint polling agents from the respective constituencies in the by-elections of Punjab.

Justice Shahid Jameel remarked that the polling agents have certain responsibilities, the polling agent can identify the voter.

Yasmin Rashid’s lawyer said that the polling agents can be taken from anywhere, it is not necessary that the polling agents belong to the concerned constituency, it used to be the same before, but now the Election Commission has issued a formal notification.

The court asked the lawyer of the Election Commission that before today, you ever made any such notification regarding the polling agents. The lawyer replied that he had never done it before today.

The court remarked how such an order could be issued verbally. Vakil Election Commission replied that if people come from outside the constituency, fighting and polling may be affected.

The court said that even if there is no alien from outside, the Election Commission should conduct the election in a clear and transparent manner. The Lahore High Court suspended the Election Commission’s notification to appoint polling agents from the respective constituencies. This notification was suspended only for by-elections. The court said that after the by-elections, polling agents can be appointed from the respective constituencies by amending the Election Commission Rules.

It should be noted that in the Lahore High Court, PTI leader Dr. Yasmin Rashid had filed a petition against the Election Commission’s decision regarding the polling agents for the by-elections.

In the petition filed on behalf of Dr. Yasmin Rashid, it has been stated that the Election Commission has directed to appoint the polling agents of the respective constituencies in the by-election, which is illegal. According to the rules of the Election Commission, the polling agents are not required to be from the respective constituencies. Election Commission has rejected the application related to polling agents.

In the application, the court has been requested to annul the decision of the Election Commission and take action on the application today.

It should be noted that the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, had challenged the Election Commission’s decision to appoint polling agents for the by-elections.
