Local body elections in Islamabad postponed

Local body elections in Islamabad have been postponed.

Noon League and PPP’s requests to stop Islamabad local body elections were accepted. ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Election Commission (EC) to make new constituencies within 65 days and announce the election schedule.

Chief Justice Islamabad High Court headed by Justice Athar Minallah heard petitions of PML-N and PTI regarding local body elections in which Election Commission officials appeared before the court.

At the beginning of the hearing, the Chief Justice asked the ECP officials what the ECP has decided. On this, the officials of the commission said that the local body elections in the federal capital have been postponed. The Election Commission has given an explanatory position on the local body elections under the government notification.

Justice Athar Minallah asked, “Tell me, in how many days will the election be held?” On this, the Election Commission officials said that elections can be held in 60 to 65 days.

The Chief Justice directed the commission officials not to transfer votes from one ward to another.

On this, the Election Commission officials told the court that they will first make new constituencies and then give the schedule of local body elections. We will announce the election schedule by making new constituencies in 60 days.

The court should order the federal government to cooperate in the local body elections because the governments obstruct the local body elections. Therefore, the court should order the federal government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility for the local body elections.

Later, the Islamabad High Court adjourned the hearing, ordering the Election Commission to make new constituencies within 65 days and announce the election schedule.
