The heavy-duty action saga by Sanjay Gupta, the writer, producer and director of the movie, begins with a bang as a group of gangsters chase and murder a cunning businessman. Welcome to Mumbai (then called Bombay) in the early nineties, ruled by the Bhasis and Bhus. And the police was a pawn in the hands of the highest payer.

During these volatile times, Amartya Rao (John Abraham), a beefy jawan, suddenly turns into a fierce beast when his younger brother Arjun (Pratik Babbar) is nearly killed by goons. Thus begins Amartya’s journey as mafia, cunning politicians and bloodthirsty encounter specialist – all of whom ultimately want to rule Mumbai. Packed with is all the stuff of a big-ticket mass entertainment.

Every line is a heavy-film dialogue- delivered with swag and theatrics to enhance the effect. It takes a lot of work—because they come from strong and inspired characters, though, so many. Their struggles are relentless and intriguing, especially as it depicts Mumbai’s turbulent past, which is eerily real. The first half especially involves John Abraham beating up the bad guys and everything else in the process.

But as a potboiler making it a larger-than-life crime, Gupta also falls prey to the curse of the second half. Here, some of the plot-twists, conflicts and complications become overwhelming to handle. However, it has enough paisa-wasool action, thrill and gun. He struggles in some emotional scenes.

But ultimately manages to deliver a performance that is not disappointing. Emraan Hashmi as Officer Vijay Savarkar is impressive. The actor is in a good form and seems to be enjoying the most, playing the role of a trigger-happy encounter specialist. Among an ocean of other actors, Suniel Shetty stands out in his short, yet impressive special appearance as Sada Anna and so does Mahesh Manjrekar, the kingmaker Bhau, who calls the shots with fine restraint.
