No-confidence resolution passed against Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari in Punjab Assembly

The Punjab Assembly passed a resolution of no confidence against Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari and election of a new Speaker by majority vote.

The Punjab Assembly session started under the chairmanship of Chairman Nawabzada Waseem Khan Baduzai. In the meeting, Government Member of Assembly Muhammad Basharat Raja requested to suspend the rules to present the resolution. After the permission of the House, Muhammad Basharat Raja moved a resolution to elect a new Speaker and remove the Deputy Speaker.

The text of the resolution said that the post of Speaker has become vacant after the election of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi as Chief Minister, therefore this House wants to suspend Rule 11 (1) and 12 (3) of the Rules of Procedure and elect the Speaker. Also sets the date of no-confidence motion against the Deputy Speaker as Friday, July 29, at 4 p.m.

When the resolution was presented in the House, the members approved it by majority vote. After the resolution was passed by majority vote, the chairman set the time for the election of the speaker at four o’clock tomorrow.

Later, the chairman explained the procedure for the election of the speaker, according to which the nomination papers will be collected for the election of the speaker by 5 pm today, the scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place today at 5:10 pm, tomorrow at 4 pm. Nomination papers can be withdrawn at any time before polling.

The chairman further said that the speaker will be elected by secret ballot.
