Notification issued by PTI members for 5 reserved seats of Punjab Assembly

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued notification to the members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the five reserved seats of the Punjab Assembly which became vacant after the disqualification of the dissident members.

According to the notification issued by the Election Commission, PTI members Fauzia Abbas Naseem, Batool Zain Janjua and Saira Raza have been elected to the reserved seats for women in the Punjab Assembly.

A notification has also been issued on reserved seats for minorities in the Punjab Assembly. A notification has also been issued on Hubcock Rafiq Babu and Samuel Yaqub on minority seats.

It may be recalled that the Election Commission of Pakistan had disqualified five members of reserved seats along with other members at the request of PTI for violating party policy by voting for Hamza Shahbaz in the election of Punjab Chief Minister.

The disqualified members included Azmi Kardar, Ayesha Nawaz and Sajida Yusuf in the women’s reserved seats, while Ijaz Masih and Haroon Imran Gul in the minority seats.

Earlier on May 28, the PTI had approached the court for non-issuance of notification by the Election Commission for the five reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly.

PTI provincial assembly member Sabteen Khan had filed a petition in the Lahore High Court in which the Election Commission was made a party.

The petition contended that the PTI had provided names to the Election Commission for issuing notifications for 5 reserved seats but the ECP was acting against the law and rules by not issuing notifications.

On May 31, the Lahore High Court had directed the Election Commission to decide on the notification of members for reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly by June 2.

Chief Justice Amir Bhatti had heard the PTI’s plea against the Election Commission for not issuing notification to members of the Assembly for five reserved seats.

On June 3, the PTI had filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court challenging the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the notification of new members of the Provincial Assembly for five reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly.

It should be noted that these 5 reserved seats were vacated after the disqualification of 25 deviant members of the PTI Assembly.

Last month, 25 deviant members of the Assembly, including five PTI members elected to reserved seats for women and minorities, were disqualified for voting for PML-N’s Hamza Shahbaz in the Punjab Chief Ministerial election. In May, the Election Commission of Pakistan formally de-notified.

The PTI had then filed a petition in the Lahore High Court directing the Election Commission of Pakistan to send notices to the five new members of the Provincial Assembly and summon them in person. The commission was given a June 2 deadline to decide on the matter.
