The opening match of the Pakistan Hockey Team against South Africa in the Commonwealth Games was drawn 2-2.
In the 14th minute of the first quarter of the match played at the Birmingham Hockey Club, Beucher scored a goal from South Africa through a short corner. In the 25th minute, Pakistan’s Rizwan Ali equalized the match by scoring through a short corner.
By scoring in the fourth quarter, South Africa took a two-goal lead against one, but Afraz saved Pakistan from defeat by scoring in the last minute of the game.
The men’s hockey event features ten teams divided into two groups, with Pakistan placed in Pool A alongside Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Scotland. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals of the event.
Pakistan’s next match will be played on July 31 against New Zealand, Scotland and Australia on August 3 and 4 respectively.
It should be noted that Pakistan has never won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the past, Pakistan’s best performance was a silver medal at the 2006 event in Melbourne while the Green Shirts won a bronze medal at the 2002 Manchester Games. It was also successful.
