Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Dr. Sikandar Mendhro died in the United States on Saturday at the age of 80 after a long illness.
Senator Mendhro, who was diagnosed with kidney cancer in October last year, was initially admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital and later transferred to California in December for further treatment, where he breathed his last.
The secretary said that the body of the senator would probably be brought to Pakistan on Tuesday and he would be buried in his native village Mataro Mandhro near Badin.
Dr Sikandar Mendhro and his wife Khaleda joined the PPP under former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto when they were studying at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Jamshoro.
Abdul Ghani Gopang, Sikandar Mendhro’s personal secretary, says he graduated in 1968 and started a clinic in Badin where Dr. Khaleda also worked as a gynecologist. The couple practiced medicine for 45 years.
Abdul Ghani Gopang said that after the imposition of martial law in the country of General Zia-ul-Haq, Sikandar Mandhro had gone into self-imposed exile. ۔
He said that Sikandar Mendhro had been repeatedly elected Member Provincial Assembly in all general elections since 1988 and had served as Minister of Health and other posts in PPP governments.
He was elected a senator in the Technocrat seat in 2018 and was nominated as the PPP parliamentary leader in the Senate.
The Secretary said that Dr. Sikandar Mendhro had built a hospital in Badin in 2013 as his last wish, which is now being run by Dr. Abdul Bari of Indus Hospital under an agreement.
Dr. Sikandar Mendhro is survived by his wife, a daughter Amima and a son Zakaria, who live in the United States.
Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed his condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family on the demise of Senator Sikandar Mendhro.
To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return
Devastated at the passing of Senator Dr. Sikandar Mandhro. His loyalty to the PPP spanned 3 generations. My most trusted & faithful representative of the people of Badin. He always spoke for party workers, worked for the poor & fought for democracy.
