Punjab Chief Minister to be elected on July 22: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has ruled that the re-election of the Punjab Chief Minister will take place on July 22.

During the hearing, it came to light that the unanimous candidate of PTI for the post of Chief Minister Pervez Elahi and Hamza Shahbaz of PML-N have agreed to re-elect the Chief Minister of Punjab on July 22.

A hearing on the petition of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Lahore High Court on the issue of election of Punjab Chief Minister was held at the Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel heard the petition.

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that it is very easy to talk on the court, judges can not answer, government benches must respect the opposition, the absence of opposition in the National Assembly has caused a lot of damage, contempt of court If you use the option to be present here on your day, we will issue a written case order later.

Two options of the Supreme Court

Earlier, the Supreme Court had given two options, re-election of Punjab Chief Minister in two days or Hamza Shahbaz to remain Chief Minister till July 17.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan said that these are the two options either Hamza will have to accept the Chief Minister or there will be re-election in due course, there will be no roundup and we will issue these orders.

During the hearing, Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said that if Hamza Shahbaz has to be the caretaker Chief Minister, he should do his own thing, he will become the king.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that a legal solution will be found to this issue. It is known that the time of one day is very short. If there is violation of law, there are courts.

PTI lawyer Babar Awan said that our party has an alliance with PML-Q, I am the representative of Sabteen Khan, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, we do not agree to the proposal.

On this, the Chief Justice said that Pervez Elahi is the candidate of Punjab Chief Minister. When he has no objection to Shahbaz Sharif becoming the caretaker Chief Minister, then what is the problem of PTI?

Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, a member of the bench, said that you had asked for only 7 days so you are getting more time.

The Chief Justice said, “Read your petition. What is your petition?” Babar Awan said that the Chief Minister of Punjab has also requested for removal, Hamza Shahbaz can not be accepted in any case.

During the break in the hearing, the PTI legal team went to PTI Chairman Imran Khan to seek his opinion and briefed him on the hearing.

When the hearing resumed in the Supreme Court, PTI lawyer Babar Awan told the court that he had spoken to Imran Khan on the matter. Imran Khan said that he respects the country’s institutions.

Babar Awan further said that Imran Khan has accepted Hamza Shahbaz as acting Chief Minister till July 17 but Imran Khan said that IG police should follow the law, Imran Khan said that Punjab Election Commissioner and Chief Secretary Law should follow. Imran Khan says that public funds will not be used in the constituencies from which elections are being contested.

During the hearing, PTI lawyer Babar Awan told the court that Hamza was accepted as the Chief Minister till the by-elections and notification of reserved seats.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan said that if there are concerns over the transparency of Punjab by-elections, we ask the Election Commission to strictly adhere to the code of conduct.

On this, Babar Awan said that there are reservations about the Election Commission.

Lahore High Court decision

It may be recalled that the Lahore High Court had yesterday decided by a 4-1 majority to convene a meeting on July 1 at 4 pm for the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab.

The court had ordered that 25 votes of the dissident members should be taken out and recounted. The one who has a majority in the re-poll will win. If one does not get the required majority, there will be a second poll under Article 130-Four Without a majority, Hamza Shahbaz will not remain in the post of Punjab Chief Minister.
