The government has decided to impose a complete ban on imports of unnecessary and luxury items.

A high level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which the critical economic situation of the country was reviewed. Participants agreed to make tough decisions to deal with economic difficulties, which would reduce the devaluation of the rupee.

The Prime Minister directed for immediate implementation of the decision to ban the import of non-essential and luxury items and said that precious foreign exchange would not be allowed to be spent on import of non-essential and luxury items.

Upon receipt of the summary of the Prime Minister’s approval, the import policy order will be amended and the import of heavy vehicles, expensive mobile phones, cosmetics and other items will be banned.

According to sources, the ban on imports is aimed at reducing the import bill. The move is expected to save about ارب 1 billion a month in foreign exchange and help stabilize the rupee.
